It's been an up-and-down rookie season for New York Yankees shortstop Anthony Volpe. After making the team on Opening Day out of spring training, Volpe was tasked with great expectations. While he's had great moments, he's also slumped average-wise.

However, he's been hot over the last week and has made some unique baseball history at the plate:

Per @OptaSTATS on Twitter:

Anthony Volpe was batting .195 entering the Yankees' current road trip. He has since had multiple hits in 5 straight games.

That's the lowest season batting average by any MLB player entering a streak of 5 straight multi-hit games in the modern era (min. 250 PA prior to streak).

After going 2-4 in the nightcap of a doubleheader against the St. Louis Cardinals on Saturday, Volpe is now hitting a more respectable .216 with 10 homers, 29 RBI and 16 steals.

He's also spent much of his struggles this year at the bottom of the order, but has moved up in the order recently again. He was hitting seventh on Saturday night.

A first-round pick of the Yankees in the 2019 MLB Draft, the 22-year-old is a major part of the Yankees future and will be a building block for their infield as they attack future free agency periods.

The Yankees are currently 46-37 on the season and 9.5 games back of the Tampa Bay Rays in the American League East. They've won six of their last 10 games and also currently hold the No. 2 spot in the wild card picture.

They'll play the Cardinals again on Sunday at 2:15 p.m. ET.
