Kansas City Royals, Pittsburgh Pirates a Part of Something That's Never Happened in the Modern Era
Saturday marked an interesting day in baseball history as several teams squandered good pitching performances.
Per @OptaSTATS on Twitter:
Today marks the only time in the modern era that 4 different MLB pitchers struck out 10+ batters but had their team lose the game on the same day (Alec Marsh, Johan Oviedo, Spencer Strider, Framber Valdez).
Ouch. Talk about some spoiled performances.
--Marsh went six innings for the Royals in a 6-1 loss to the Rays. He surrendered just two runs on five hits. He walked one and struck out 11. He fell to 0-3 on the year with a 5.40 ERA.
--Oviedo went seven innings for the Pirates in a 3-1 loss to the San Francisco Giants. He took a no-decision after allowing one run on one hit. He walked three and struck out 10. His ERA for the season is now 4.53.
--As for Strider, he was more hittable for Atlanta. He gave up eight hits and five runs in a loss to the White Sox. He walked none and struck out 10. He's now 11-3 on the season and boasts a 3.66 ERA.
--Finally, Valdez got a no-decision in a historic loss to the Angels. The Astros fell, 13-12, in 10 innings in Anaheim. Valdez went 6.1 innings, allowing five runs on seven hits. He walked two and struck out 13. The All-Star now has an ERA that sits at 2.76.
These teams will all meet these same opponents on Sunday: The Pirates host the Giants at 12:05 p.m. ET, the Braves host the White Sox at 1:35 p.m. ET, the Royals host the Rays at 2:10 p.m. ET and the Astros visit the Angels at 7:10 p.m. ET.
