Slugger Pete Alonso Re-Writing New York Mets History Books
New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso keeps hitting home runs -- and keeps re-writing the team history books in the process.
Alonso went 1-5 on Friday night with a grand slam as the Mets beat the Cleveland Guardians, 10-9, in extra-innings.
Lets start with the first piece of history, courtesy of ESPN Stats & Info:
Alonso now has 17 HR this season, most in MLB. He’s also tied himself and Dave Kingman for the most HR through 50 games in Mets history. Today is the Mets 46th game of the season.
With four games left to play until game 50, it's certainly conceivable that Alonso can break that record. But there's even more history from Alonso out of Friday night.
Also from ESPN Stats & Info:
Pete Alonso is the 2nd player in Mets history to hit a game-tying grand slam in the 7th inning or later, joining Carl Everett on Sept. 13, 1997 vs the Expos.
Alonso's grand slam came off of Guardians reliever James Karinchak in the seventh inning.
For the season, Alonso has 41 RBI with those 17 home runs. He's hitting .233 and has an .877 OPS.
For this career, he's a .259 hitter with 163 homers and 421 RBI.
Francisco Lindor got the game-winning walk-off hit for the Mets, which must feel nice considering the drama of the week for him.
As a result of the win, the Mets are now 23-23 on the season. The loss dropped the Guardians to 20-24 on the season.
