Andrew McCutchen Moves Up Prestigious List in Pittsburgh Pirates History
It's been a magical few days for Pittsburgh Pirates legend Andrew McCutchen. Just days after he became the fifth active player to record 2,000 career hits, McCutchen continued his ascent up the Pirates team record books.
By hitting a leadoff homer against the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday, McCutchen put himself into a prestigious group in team history.
Per ESPN Stats & Info:
Andrew McCutchen homered to lead off the game for the Pirates against the Cubs tonight. He now has 10 career leadoff HR as a Pirate, tied with Al Martin & Adam Frazier for 2nd-most in franchise history, trailing only Barry Bonds (20).
Any time that you are on a list with Barry Bonds, even in Pirates history, you're in elite company.
While Bonds is most remembered for his career as a San Francisco Giant, he was elite with the Pirates too. In seven seasons in Pittsburgh, he made two All-Star teams and won the MVP award in 1990.
As for McCutchen, the 36-year-old is now hitting .266 with nine homers, 24 RBI and seven stolen bases. He's posted an OPS of .817.
It's been a nice reunion season in Pittsburgh for McCutchen, who played in the Steel City from 2009-2017 before landing with the Giants, Yankees, Phillies and Brewers.
He is a five-time All-Star who also won an MVP award for the Pirates in 2013.
At the time of this posting, the Pirates lead the Cubs by a score of 5-1 in the bottom of the sixth inning. The Pirates entered the day in first place in the National League Central.
