Atlanta Braves Break Up Philadelphia Phillies Ace Zack Wheeler's No-Hitter in 6th Inning
The Atlanta Braves' offense has finally come back to life.
Philadelphia Phillies right-hander Zack Wheeler had a no-hitter going through five innings of Game 2 of the NLDS on Monday night, and it was still alive two outs into the sixth. Second baseman Ozzie Albies broke up Wheeler's no-no, though, singling to right on the first pitch of his at-bat.
According to MLB.com's Sarah Langs, Wheeler managed to post the second-longest no-hit bid in Phillies postseason history. Roy Halladay is the only pitcher who has taken one further, tossing a no-hitter in Game 1 of the 2010 NLDS.
The Braves were able to get a run on the play, as right fielder Ronald Acuña Jr. came around to score on an error by shortstop Trea Turner. The run was unearned, not impacting Wheeler's postseason ERA.
Wheeler bounced back with a strikeout – his ninth of the night – to get out of the inning, preserving the Phillies' 4-1 lead.
The Braves finally got to Wheeler for real with one down in the seventh, when catcher Travis d'Arnaud launched a two-run home run to chase the ace off the mound. He ended his outing with 10 strikeouts, one walk and two earned runs allowed.
Wheeler was making his second start of the playoffs, with his first coming in Game 1 of the NL Wild Card Series versus the Miami Marlins. The righty struck out eight and allowed one earned run in 6.2 innings of work that night, powering Philadelphia to a 4-1 win.
The former All-Star now boasts a 2.08 ERA this postseason. He had a 2.78 ERA during the Phillies' run to the World Series in 2022.
Since joining Philadelphia in 2020, Wheeler is 43-25 with a 3.06 ERA and 1.055 WHIP. This year, however, Wheeler only put up a 3.61 ERA – the highest of his Phillies career.
The Phillies remain in position to go up 2-0 in the NLDS, leading the Braves 4-3 midway through the seventh.
