Miami Marlins' Luis Arraez Continues Chase For History, Now Hitting Over .400
Yes, there's still 100-ish games left in the season, but we're choosing to monitor history now.
Miami Marlins' infielder Luis Arraez went 2-4 on Tuesday against the Kansas City Royals, and in doing so, raised his batting average to .401 on the season.
He accomplished some amazing baseball history on Monday and now he's setting his sights higher:
He's seeking to become the first major league player to hit more than .400 since Ted Williams back in 1941. Williams hit .406 that year.
There were three players that hit over .400 in various Negro Leagues more recently (1943, 1943, 1948) but it hasn't been done in the majors since Williams.
His bat-to-ball skills are elite. In 212 at-bats this year, Arraez has just 11 strikeouts. He's also got one home run and 30 RBIs.
For his career, he's a .326 hitter with 15 homers and 162 RBI. He won a batting title in the American League in 2022 with the Twins, hitting .316. He made his major league debut in 2019.
The Marlins beat the Royals, 6-1, to move to 34-28 on the season. They are one of the surprise teams in baseball this year and now trail the first-place Atlanta Braves by just 2.5 games. Miami has won five in a row and eight of its last 10.
The loss dropped Kansas City to an AL Central worst 18-43. If not for the Oakland Athletics, we'd be talking about them as the worst team in the sport.
The two teams will play again on Wednesday at 6:10. That game has been moved to accommodate Miami hosting Game 3 of the NBA Finals.
