Michael Lorenzen's Vans Cleats Headed to Baseball Hall of Fame After Phillies No-Hitter
Michael Lorenzen made plenty of history when he tossed a no-hitter against the Washington Nationals on Wednesday night, and the National Baseball Hall of Fame made sure to preserve part of it.
The newly-minted Philadelphia Phillies right-hander was wearing custom white Vans cleats when he took the mound at Citizens Bank Park. At the conclusion of his hitless gem, Lorenzen handed his shoes over, and they made their way up to Cooperstown, New York.
According to MLB.com, they will be the first pair of Vans ever to be featured in the Hall of Fame's museum.
Lorenzen has been wearing custom Vans all season, picking up multiple pairs when he was a member of the Detroit Tigers – one for home games and one for away games. The ones the Hall of Fame hauled away were his lone Phillies-friendly pair, though.
“I've got to get a new pair for sure,” Lorenzen told reporters after the game. “I mean, those are my only pair. We need to make another pair as soon as possible.”
Lorenzen made his first career All-Star appearance at 31 years old this season, going to Seattle as the Tigers' lone representative. Naturally, he wore Mariners-themed Vans for the game.
The right-hander initially spent seven seasons as a reliever with the Cincinnati Reds, but finally became a starter with the Los Angeles Angels in 2022. Detroit traded Lorenzen to Philadelphia on Aug. 1.
After allowing two earned runs across 8.0 innings in his Phillies debut on Aug. 3, Lorenzen tossed a no-hitter in his very next start. It was the 14th no-hitter in Phillies history – their first since 2015 – and the first against the Nationals since they stopped being the Montreal Expos in 2004.
Lorenzen's next start will most likely come against the Toronto Blue Jays on Tuesday, giving him five days to find another pair of custom Vans cleats.
