Starting Lineups, Pitchers for Arizona Diamondbacks, Chicago Cubs March 16 Spring Training Game
The Arizona Diamondbacks will play the Chicago Cubs Thursday at 4:05 p.m. ET at the Cubs' spring training home, Sloan Park in Mesa, Arizona.
Veteran Madison Bumgarner will make his second start of the spring, after allowing two runs to the Cleveland Guardians on two hits and two walks in his first appearance March 5. Since signing a five-year, $85 million contract with the Diamondbacks, Bumgarner has been a shell of his former self, posting a 4.98 ERA in 65 starts through his first three seasons with his new team.
Drew Smyly will take the mound for the Cubs. Smyly signed a one-year, $4.5 million deal with the Cubs last March. After a successful 2022 season, Smyly re-upped with the Cubs this winter, signing a two-year, $19 million contract to remain with the club.
Smyly is making his fourth start of the spring. After allowing a combined five runs over four innings pitched in his first two starts, Smyly tossed four scoreless innings against the Chicago White Sox last week.
