Toronto Blue Jays' Chris Bassitt Continues to Make Team History
In his first year North of the border, Toronto Blue Jays starting pitcher Chris Bassitt continues to etch himself into the team history books.
Last week, he threw a complete-game shutout to break multiple team droughts, and on Wednesday against the New York Yankees, Bassitt joined an elite club in Blue Jays history.
Per Sarah Langs of MLB.com:
Chris Bassitt has turned in 3 straight scoreless outings of 7+ innings
that’s tied for the longest such streak in Blue Jays franchise history, with:
1998 Roger Clemens
1988 Dave Stieb
Bassitt went seven scoreless innings and the Blue Jays won 3-0 in 10 innings on a walk-off home run by Danny Jansen.
Bassitt also had seven strikeouts while surrendering just three hits and one walk. He lowered his season ERA to 3.05 in the process.
He's 5-2 on the year and has 48 strikeouts in 56 innings. For his career, he's 51-36 with a 3.43 ERA. He spent one season with the Chicago White Sox, six with the Oakland Athletics and one with the New York Mets before signing a three-year deal in Toronto this offseason.
While seven scoreless innings in three consecutive starts is impressive, it's amazing that Bassitt is only the third Jays pitcher to do it, considering the run of good starters they've had over the franchise's history. In addition to Clemens and Stieb, Pat Hentgen won a Cy Young, as did Robbie Ray. Aaron Sanchez, Rickey Romero and Marcus Stroman also had good runs in Toronto. Roy Halladay is in the Hall of Fame.
