Once upon a time, the New York Yankees acquired Sonny Gray and Joey Gallo at the MLB trade deadline, in hopes of solidifying their team's roster before making a deep playoff push.

In 2017, the Yankees dealt prospects James Kaprielian, Dustin Fowler and Jorge Mateo to the Oakland Athletics for Gray, an American League All-Star. Less than two years earlier, Gray finished third in American League Cy Young Award voting. The Yankees undoubtedly had high hopes for Gray, but the right-hander never seemed to comfortable in New York and was unable to find his footing in the Big Apple. In his lone full season in New York, Gray logged an 11-9 record and a career-worst 4.90 ERA. After just a year and a half in pinstripes, the Yankees pulled the plug on the Sonny Gray experiment, shipping him and Reiver Sanmartin to the Cincinnati Reds for Shed Long.

Four years after acquiring Gray, the Yankees picked up another American League All-Star. Days before the trade deadline, the Yankees sent Josh Smith, Glenn Otto, Trevor Hauver and Ezequiel Duran to the Texas Rangers in exchange for Gold Glover and two-time All-Star Joey Gallo. Like Gray, Gallo experienced a significant dip in production after coming to New York, logging career lows in Batting Average (.159), On Base Percentage (.282) and OPS (.621). Gallo was eventually dealt to the Los Angeles Dodgers, a year after the Yankees added the power bat.

Monday night, the two Minnesota Twins teammates stung their former club, topping the Yankees 6-1 at Target Field.

Gray tossed a phenomenal seven scoreless innings, allowing just three hits and two walks, striking out eight and lowering his ERA to a Major League-best 0.62.

Gallo added a solo home run in the fourth inning, which gave the Twins a 4-0 lead. It was his sixth home run of the season. In his first year in Minnesota, Gallo is slashing .250/.372/1.150 with 12 RBI. Gallo signed a one-year deal with the Twins last December.

The Twins acquired Gray in a trade with the Cincinnati Reds prior to the start of the 2022 season. The Twins flipped Chase Petty for Gray and Francis Peguero.

Now, the two former Yankees are playing like All-Stars once again, and Monday, they got a chance to pay back their former team.
