Minnesota Twins starting pitcher Sonny Gray pitched a gem against his former team Monday night. In doing so, he became the Major League leader in ERA.

Gray lowered his ERA to 0.62 Monday night, when he did not allow the New York Yankees to score a single run over seven innings. The Yankees mustered just three hits and five total baserunners, as Gray sat the Yankees down one after another, striking out eight, while walking two.

Through five starts and 22 innings pitched, Gray has allowed just two runs and 17 hits all season, good for a 0.62 ERA and 1.07 WHIP. Gray entered the evening with a 0.82 ERA and surpassed Los Angeles Angels star Shohei Ohtani (0.64 ERA) and Yankees ace Gerrit Cole (0.79 ERA) by the time he exited Target Field Monday night.

Gray, 33, is at the top of his game. Through five starts, he has looked every bit the ace he was with the Oakland Athletics early in his career. In his second full-season in the show, Gray placed third in American League Cy Young Award voting, in 2015.

Gray struggled in his short time pitching in New York with the Yankees in 2017 and 2018, but found his groove again after he was traded to the Cincinnati Reds. In his first season in Cincinnati, Gray posted a 2.87 ERA, earning his second All-Star nod and placing seventh in National League Cy Young Award voting.

Gray signed a three-year contract extension with the Reds, but was traded to Minnesota prior to the start of last season.

Gray has quietly been one of the sport's most underrated pitchers, having enjoyed success throughout his 11-year career. He entered Monday night's game with a career 3.52 ERA and 1.18 WHIP.
