WATCH: Detroit Tigers' Eduardo Rodriguez Loses Perfect Game in 7th vs. Orioles
Detroit Tigers pitcher Eduardo Rodriguez was near-flawless on Sunday, in his start against the Baltimore Orioles at Camden Yards.
Rodriguez sat down the first 20 batters he faced Sunday afternoon, not allowing a single runner to reach base. Rodriguez had his perfect game bid come to a crashing end with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, when first baseman Ryan Mountcastle rifled a base hit to left field.
Rodriguez recovered nicely from his first blemish of the day, getting Ramon Urias to fly out to left field to end the inning.
Tigers manager A.J. Hinch did not bring Rodriguez out to pitch the eighth inning, effectively ending the lefty's day after throwing 95 pitches. Rodriguez was unable to try for the complete game shutout, as Chasen Shreve relieved him.
Rodriguez's perfect game bid came less than 48 hours after Chicago Cubs starting pitcher Drew Smyly road a perfect game into the eighth inning, but had his perfect game bid end at the hands of a collision with catcher Yan Gomes, when both players tried to field a weak dribbler hit to the left side of the pitcher's mound.
Rodriguez tossed seven scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and no walks, while striking out six.
The Tigers signed Rodriguez to a five-year, $77 million contract following the 2021 season. Rodriguez had been a member of the Boston Red Sox before moving over to the Midwest. Rodriguez appears to be a worthwhile investment. Through five starts this season, Rodriguez has a 2.32 ERA across 31 innings.
