Boxing Champion Teofimo Lopez Announces His Retirement

"The Takeover" has come to an end.

Newly-minted WBO and The Ring junior welterweight titleholder Teofimo Lopez has retired.

Lopez made the announcement when speaking to Max Kellerman on ESPN's "This Just In." The announcement comes just two days after his unanimous decision victory over Josh Taylor to capture junior welterweight gold. It was an impressive victory for Lopez in the midst of criticism over his last outing against Sandor Martin.

Lopez silenced his doubters by taking over the Taylor fight down the stretch. Taylor had no answer for Lopez's pressure. It was quite clear that "The Takeover" wasn't worried about "The Tartan Tornado's" punching power, as he was never hit by a punch that gave him pause.

Ultimately, Lopez scored the unanimous decision victory and will apparently now ride off into the sunset.

When pressed by Max Kellerman about leaving behind a showdown with the undisputed lightweight titleholder Devin Haney, Lopez insisted that he doesn't feel motivated to fight "The Dream." He even feels Haney's presentation and hype took a page out of his own book.

When asked about not getting to fight Gervonta "Tank" Davis, Lopez claimed that Davis doesn't truly want the fight. Time will tell if this is just a phase or a marketing ploy or if he's truly done with the sport, but for now, Lopez is a former boxer.
