Teddy Atlas Rips Boxing Judge Dave Moretti Over Haney vs. Lomachenko Scorecard

The legendary boxing trainer is calling for reform.

Teddy Atlas, a renowned boxing trainer, wants to put an end to bad judging.

The undisputed lightweight championship fight between Devin Haney and Vasiliy Lomachenko on May 20 left a sour taste in the mouths of many fight fans. The feeling had nothing to do with Haney or Lomachenko, as the two put forth an exciting and highly competitive 12-round title fight. For some, the problem didn't even lie with who won the bout, which was Haney via unanimous decision.

A big issue fight fans had was the scorecard from ringside judge Dave Moretti. The generous consensus in the boxing world was that Lomachenko banked some of the later rounds against Haney, but Moretti only scored one of the last six rounds in favor of "Loma." Perhaps most egregious is the fact that Moretti gave the 10th round to Haney, a round that most boxing pundits and fans scored for Lomachenko.

During a new episode of "THE FIGHT with Teddy Atlas," the legendary boxing trainer went off on Moretti.

"Week in and week out there's something that's wrong, nefarious, something that stinks, something we're talking about instead of the fight," Atlas said. "A week ago it was the referee stopping the fight, now it's this. Next week, it'll be something else. This was a competitive fight. I'm talking about one judge that has to be put out to pasture."

Atlas doesn't take issue with those who believe the fight was too close to call. With that said, he feels Moretti couldn't score the most obvious round of the fight correctly.

"Again, I don't have a problem that you wanna say that Haney won 115-113 or it could've been close or it could've been a draw or Loma could've won by a point or two," Atlas said. "No problem, but I have a problem when all these close rounds, the two in the fight that weren't close that Moretti gives the 10th round, the round that was not close, was indisputably was not close, he gives that round to Haney."

Atlas has been encouraged to start a petition for a Federal Boxing Commission. He wants reform in the sport of boxing, and he wants Moretti to explain his score total.

"What does Moretti do in the late rounds? Five of the last six rounds he gives to Haney," Atlas said. "How do you explain that? See, that's where the problem is. How do you explain that, Mr. Moretti?"
