Amateur careers are supposed to help MMA fighters hone their skills in the cage before they turn pro, but Travis Lawrence’s amateur debut ended so quickly that he only had time to work on one strike.

Lawrence had previously competed in an amateur kickboxing bout for Tennessee-based Agoge Fight League late last year and won a unanimous decision, but this year he decided to make the jump over to MMA.

The Nashville-based fighter was booked to make his amateur debut at Agoge Fight League 3 in Goodlettsville, Tennessee against Dawson Dillard, who picked up a unanimous decision win in his own debut earlier this year.

Competing in a featherweight bout, Lawrence immediately rushed across the cage off the opening bell and landed a huge right hand that sent Dillard falling backwards.

Lawrence withheld any follow-up strikes as the referee quickly jumped in, and although Dillard did try to grab ahold of his opponent’s legs the 18-year-old’s visible confusion that the fight was over makes it seem as if the referee’s quick action was likely warranted.

It may not have been as dynamic a technique, but the speed with which Lawrence got to his opponent and ended things with one strike may remind some fans of Jorge Masvidal’s infamous 5-second knockout of Ben Askren with a flying knee at UFC 239.

The quick win may not have given Lawrence much of a chance to showcase his overall skills, but a dream debut like that one should at least given the featherweight plenty of confidence heading into his next kickboxing or MMA bout.
