Who is Canelo Alvarez Fighting Next and When?

The boxing megastar seems to have his plans laid out.

NOTE: Article updated to reflect the new opponent and date for Canelo Alvarez's next fight.

Canelo Alvarez, widely regarded as the biggest star in boxing today, has inked a multifight deal with Premier Boxing Champions (PBC).

Chris Mannix of Sports Illustrated reported the news after Canelo took to his Instagram account to declare, "Done deal," along with posting a PBC logo. The report also noted that WBC Middleweight Champion Jermall Charlo is the likely opponent for Canelo in the Mexican star's first bout on his current PBC deal.

Canelo vs. Charlo could very well take place this September. ESPN's Mike Coppinger initially penciled in Mexican Independence Day (September 16) as a likely date.

UPDATE: Jermall Charlo is out of the fight with Canelo. Instead, Jermall's twin brother, Jermell, will step up to fight Canelo on September 30.

While Canelo had been linked with Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Boxing, a rematch with WBA light heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol simply couldn't materialize. Canelo wanted the second bout to take place at 175 pounds, just like the first encounter. Bivol scoffed at the idea, saying he wanted to cut down in weight to go after Canelo's undisputed super middleweight gold. Bivol also wasn't happy with the pay being offered for the rematch.

Knowing that the rematch was out of reach, the two sides have moved on. Now, the speculation begins on who else Canelo could be facing. If Charlo is indeed next and if Canelo can get past the undefeated bruiser, many will start clamoring for Canelo to fight WBC interim super middleweight titleholder David Benavidez.

While rumors have been swirling of a bout between Benavidez and WBA (Regular) super middleweight champion David Morrell, "El Bandera Roja" poured cold water on the matchup during an interview with Fight Hype.
