Muhammad took to X on September 12, where he exclaimed "I hope Sean [Strickland's] still the champ when I get the [Welterweight] title, It'll be the easiest path to double champ status."
Fans replied explaining that Strickland is a "bad matchup" for Muhammad, citing Strickland's takedown defense as a major factor, but Muhammad believes otherwise:
"His takedown defense is good? Usman took him down at will ...He hasn't fought a wrestler at middleweight ...He's a pressure fighter that hates to be pressured I can beat him in many ways.
"...I've was calling him out since before he was champ you dorks," Muhammad remarked in another post.
Muhammad, currently ranked No.3 in the welterweight division, is on a nine-fight unbeaten streak (discounting his NC to Leon Edwards), and firmly believes he should be next in line for the welterweight throne. "There's no denying me," Muhammad declared after his victory over Gilbert Burns at UFC 288.
If Muhammad does achieve the welterweight championship, Strickland would be a viable option for a double-championship clash. Though for now, Strickland has bigger fish to fry with his first title defense.

"I think Dricus Du Plessis, I think even Robert Whittaker, maybe, Jared Cannonier's also got a great case," UFC commentator Michael Bisping reeled off many great names for Strickland's first title defense. Despite this, the consensus right now is that of an immediate rematch for Adesanya, as far as UFC president Dana White and Daniel Cormier are concerned.
How does Muhammad stack up against Strickland? At the very least it's a question that can be asked now that Adesanya's dominant reign appears to be coming to an end.
