Jimbo Fisher Breaks Silence on 'Sliced Bread' NIL Controversy at Texas A&M
Sliced Bread is not just an ordinary loaf of bread. A couple of years ago, a random user named Sliced Bread made accusations about Texas A&M and head coach Jimbo Fisher. At that time, the user mentioned that Fisher purchased his recruiting class with $30 million in NIL payments, sparking a huge debate across the sport among the national media.
Fisher, who was fired from Texas A&M in November, recently spoke on that controversy during an episode of Pardon My Take, and it's safe to say he still has ill feelings about the way everything unfolded at that time:
“College football changed on a lie...When he wrote those numbers, I said, ‘oh my god, where’s it at?’ I wish that would have happened...The amount of NIL deals at A&M at that time, in all sports combined, it was right at a million dollars for all sports combined...That’s what upset me so much about it. You were insinuating [details about] the families of [the athletes].”That was as far from the truth as anything that was ever out there."
Fisher held nothing back at all about the Sliced Bread controversy, and he still laments the way everything went down even a couple of years later.
Nonetheless, now Texas A&M is well-known for having loads of NIL resources, something that was appealing as they searched to replace Fisher before eventually landing on ex-Duke head coach Mike Elko.
The criticism will always come with it, but Aggie AD Ross Bjork said "Why not celebrate that?"
But, for Jimbo Fisher, the Sliced Bread debate of 2021 will always be remembered for changing college football "on a lie."
