Bernie Ecclestone Breaks Hearts As He Makes Mick Schumacher Verdict - "Michael Could Have Given His Son So Many Details"
Bernie Ecclestone, the former boss of Formula One, has expressed his opinion regarding Mick Schumacher's current status. According to Ecclestone, if Mick's father Michael Schumacher were in a position to advise him, he would be in a "good team."
Mick Schumacher has recently been dropped by Haas after spending two years with the American outfit. The team has opted for a more experienced driver in Nico Hulkenberg. As a result, Mick Schumacher will not be on the F1 grid for the 2023 season.
However, Mick Schumacher has found a role as Mercedes' third driver, acting as a substitute for either Lewis Hamilton or George Russell should either of them be unable to race.
The details surrounding Michael Schumacher's condition have been limited since his skiing accident in 2013. It is unclear how involved he has been in his son's career since then.
Bernie Ecclestone believes that Mick Schumacher is missing his father's guidance and experience. This is a significant loss for Mick, given that his father is one of the most successful drivers in the history of Formula One, with seven World Championship titles to his name.
Ecclestone explained to Sport Bild:
"With Michael as a consultant at his side, Mick would be a regular driver in the cockpit of a good team.
“With all his experience, Michael could have given his son so many details. He would have shown him the right way, in terms of driving, but also politically.”
In addition to his previous comments, Bernie Ecclestone has also expressed his belief that Mick Schumacher made a mistake by choosing to join the Ferrari Driver Academy instead of Red Bull's program.
Red Bull has a well-established reputation for developing young talent through their academy and sister team, AlphaTauri (formerly Toro Rosso). They have been instrumental in bringing young drivers to the forefront of Formula One, with the likes of Max Verstappen and Carlos Sainz Jr. having come through their ranks.
Ecclestone has also noted that Red Bull has a more competitive team than Ferrari at present, which would provide Mick with more opportunities to showcase his talents in a higher-performing car. He continued:
"He was on the wrong team. Red Bull would have been better for him. There they would have cared more for him and built him up.
"The burden of his name is heavy. Living up to its name is its biggest problem. It will be difficult for him to find a cockpit. Especially one in which he can win. I'm sorry!"
