The German fan base for F1 is reportedly declining significantly, and Bernie Ecclestone, the former owner of the sport, has provided his perspective on the matter. Ecclestone has criticised the current owners of F1, Liberty Media, and pinpointed what he believes is wrong with the sport.

In Germany, Sky holds the rights to broadcast F1 races, but the channel experienced a significant downturn in viewership in 2022. Approximately one million viewers tuned in to watch each race, which is a significant drop for a country that once had a large following of F1 enthusiasts.

There has not been a grand prix held in Germany since 2019 which could be part of the problem, however Ecclestone thinks Liberty Media is appealing more to the American market.

In an interview with F1-insider.com, Ecclestone took the opportunity to reflect on the company he sold the sport to at the time. He expressed strong views on the current state of the sport, and criticised Liberty Media's approach to managing it. He explained:

"What does well in the United States does not do so well in Europe, and vice versa. Germany is missing a great driver, but that's not the only thing.

"I think the Germans in particular don't let themselves be put away so easily. F1 is being made more and more for the American market.

"It is becoming more and more like Formula Hollywood."

Ecclestone continued:

"The race in Las Vegas this year should be the crown jewel, but I think the Germans would like to see a sporting competition and not such a sham. The balance between show and sport doesn't fit anymore."
