In a sombre announcement, Alfa Romeo has confirmed its departure from Formula 1, marking the end of its six-year partnership with Sauber Motorsport. The team's final race will take place at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, concluding a journey that began with great enthusiasm in 2018.

Key Takeaways:

  • End of an Era: Alfa Romeo, returning to F1 in 2018 after a 30-year break, has announced its exit ahead of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. The partnership with Sauber Motorsport has been described as "fruitful and passionate," marking the conclusion of six years in the sport.
  • Acknowledging Contributions: The statement from Alfa Romeo paid tribute to the late Sergio Marchionne, who was instrumental in forming the partnership in 2018. It also recognized the drivers who represented the team over the years, as well as the contributions of Sauber Team, co-owner Finn Rausing, and key team leaders.
  • Reflecting on Success: Alfa Romeo CEO, Jean-Philippe Imparato, reflected on the positive international visibility and profound human and sporting experiences gained from the F1 venture. He hinted at a future return for Alfa Romeo in motorsports when conditions are favourable.

Alfa Romeo's journey in Formula 1, beginning with Nino Farina's championship win in 1950, has been filled with historical significance and remarkable achievements. Their recent stint in the sport, reignited in 2018 in collaboration with Sauber Motorsport, has been a chapter of passion and dedication. This partnership, lasting six years, brought about significant moments and achievements, but one that has yet to bear real fruits.

In their official statement, CEO, Jean-Philippe Imparato said:

“When you close such an important chapter in the history of a brand, it's time to take stock.

“For Alfa Romeo, this F1 adventure represented an international showcase at the highest level, as well as a profound human and sporting experience. In my humble opinion, the return on investment from the work we have done here has been the most positive in my entire career.

“The benefits in terms of visibility serve as a benchmark for the entire Stellantis group. Alfa Romeo has competition in its DNA and will return to thrill its fans as soon as possible, when the conditions are right."

As a nod to their history, Alfa Romeo will don a special livery for the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. The C43 car will feature the number six, celebrating their six-year partnership with Sauber, and the phrase “Alfa Romeo nei nostri cuori,” meaning “Alfa Romeo always in our hearts.” I assume these changes will be placed on top of the Vegas special livery, which will be kept on their cars.

Despite sitting ninth in the constructors' championship, the team's legacy in F1 is undeniable. From their early successes with Nino Farina and Juan Manuel Fangio to their role as an engine supplier and a constructor, Alfa Romeo has left an indelible mark on the sport. Their departure is not just the end of a partnership but the closing of a significant chapter in F1 history.
