Fernando Alonso has confirmed that Aston Martin will be bringing upgrades to the upcoming Canadian Grand Prix on 16-18 June and the British Grand Prix on 7-9 July.

The British team were overtaken in the constructors' standings at the Spanish Grand Prix yesterday by Mercedes who are now sitting in second place behind Red Bull, and Lewis Hamilton closed the gap the Alonso in the drivers' standings.

The Spanish driver suffered from damage to his floor during qualifying on Saturday, meaning he started from eighth position on the grid. Alonso ended up finishing in seventh place behind his Aston Martin teammate Lance Stroll in sixth.

During his post-race interviews with the media, Alonso explained that George Russell and Sergio Perez, who also started lower down than usual, were faster than the Aston Martin's during the race. However, he went on to confirm that upgrades are coming for the team in Canada and Silverstone. He said:

“After starting quite far back, I was able to recover – but only up to a certain point. Both Russell and Checo were faster than us today, so there was a lot of work to do.

“Looking at the Constructors, it’s true that Mercedes gained some important points, but we again gained points on Ferrari.

“In Canada, we’ll bring more things, and in Silverstone too… It will all depend on which team is bringing updates.

“Even then, with a normal qualifying, we would have started alongside Hamilton and could have had some better chances.

“I think it’s just one race – and then in Canada, we crush them.”

Alonso has had a fantastic start to the season bagging third-place on the podium for four out of the seven races so far, and a second-place podium in Monaco.
