F1 Rumour: George Russell's Mercedes Contract To Be Extended As Team Locks Him In
According to reports, Mercedes has made a crucial decision over one of their driver contracts. Even though the official announcement is still pending, insider knowledge reveals that they have extended George Russell's contract through the 2025 Formula 1 season.
This move to keep the British driver onboard was hardly a surprise. His original arrival at Mercedes' Brackley team was announced in 2021, and was described as a "long-term" commitment. The phrase "long-term" in this context is often intentionally vague about the precise length of the contract.
What's said to be confirmed imminently, as per the report from the Spanish Motorsport.com, is that Russell's relationship with Mercedes will continue until the conclusion of the 2025 Formula 1 season. This reaffirms Mercedes' trust in Russell, who was branded as 'Mr. Consistency' during the 2022 season, finishing in fourth in the drivers' championship. Russell is currently in fifth place in the drivers' standings for 2023 with 65 points behind his teammate Lewis Hamilton who has 87 points in fourth place.
The Mercedes team has struggled during the ground effect era, in 2022 and 2023 so far. However, their double podium finish at the Spanish Grand Prix yesterday raised a lot of hopes, and moved them into second place in the constructors' standings behind Red Bull and ahead of Aston Martin.
The future of seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton continues to be up for discussion. The seven-time champion's contract, which is currently due to expire at the end of this season, has been a huge talking point since Christmas. Although there has been many rumours of Hamilton making a move to Ferrari, the driver has remained adamant that he is loyal to Mercedes and that it is just a formality.
After the Spanish Grand Prix yesterday, Hamilton revealed that he is set to sit down with Toto Wolff today to hopefully come to an agreement.
