In a thrilling Spanish Grand Prix, George Russell emerged to claim his first podium of the season, an event that took him quite by surprise with his team being down so far this season. The British racer held a fierce standoff with Sergio Perez in the final laps, successfully clinching a double podium victory for the Mercedes team alongside his teammate Lewis Hamilton.

Russell expressed his pleasant surprise post-race to Nico Rosberg, saying: 

"A little surprised for sure [with the podium]," crediting the victory to his team. "kudos to the team for giving me a really great car today."

This season, Mercedes has grappled to keep pace with their rivals, rendering Russell and Hamilton's accomplishment at the Grand Prix a notable feat. His delight was apparent as he discussed the race's outcome and its potential implications for the future. Russell commented: 

"A fun race for us, "he said. "Starting P12 [and pushing] all the way to P3, a sign of things to come.

"[The car] feels better, you're just putting in those lap times and comparing with the guys around us. 

"We were just quicker and quicker, we know we have introduced more downforce and we things are in a better window, pleased to be on the podium."

Russell finished P3 behind his teammate who finished P2, pushing Mercedes ahead of Aston Martin in the Constructor Standings. Red Bull's Max Verstappen finished 24 seconds ahead of anyone, winning yet another race of the season.
