Two-time F1 champion Fernando Alonso opened up about the speculation linking him to Mercedes for the 2025 season, amidst Lewis Hamilton's departure to Ferrari. The Spanish driver emphasised his unique position in the current F1 landscape but confirmed no discussions with Mercedes have taken place.

Key Takeaways:

  • Fernando Alonso is in the frame to join Mercedes in 2025, following Lewis Hamilton's switch to Ferrari but denies any current contact with the team.
  • Mercedes is thought to be contemplating promoting Andrea Kimi Antonelli, a promising Italian newcomer, alongside considering Alonso for Hamilton's vacancy, as well as other names being mentioned.
  • Alonso highlights his unparalleled position as a fast world champion available for 2025 but vows to prioritise talks with Aston Martin before exploring other options.
Fernando Alonso - Aston Martin

Fernando Alonso, at 42, finds himself at a significant crossroads in his illustrious Formula 1 career. With the 2025 season on the horizon and the paddock intrigued with Lewis Hamilton's imminent move to Ferrari, Alonso's future has become a topic of intense speculation. In a candid interview with the BBC, Alonso shed light on the swirling rumours linking him to Mercedes, acknowledging the speculation yet confirming that no formal dialogue has commenced between him and the Brackley-based outfit.

Mercedes, grappling with Hamilton's departure, faces a pivotal decision in selecting his successor. Alonso, despite a tumultuous stint at McLaren-Mercedes back in 2007, has emerged as a potential candidate. His experience and proven prowess render him an attractive prospect for the Silver Arrows.

Alonso commented on the situation during an interview with BBC. He explained:

"I am aware of my situation, which is unique.

"There are only three world champions on the grid, and fast world champions, because in the past maybe there were some champions who were maybe not so committed to be fast. And I am probably the only one available for 2025. So I am in a good position.

"But at the same time, when I make the decision whether I want to keep racing in the future, the first and only talk I will have in the beginning will be with Aston Martin. That will be my only priority.

"But if we cannot reach an agreement and I want to commit to race in F1, I know I have a privileged position, I am probably attractive to other teams, the performance they saw last year, the commitment."
