F1 News: George Russell Out Of Canadian Grand Prix After Impressive Comeback Drive
George Russell has been forced to retire from the Canadian Grand Prix after some damage from his earlier crash was causing critical issues in his W14.
On lap 55, the British driver was instructed by the Mercedes team to return to the pits to retire the car due to a suspected brake duct issue. It is expected that this is from damage sustained from Russell's crash earlier in the race.
Russell had lost control over the chicane previously causing him to collide with the race wall. He was able to crawl back to the pits and continue with the race after the team replaced the front wing, however, there was clearly more damage than they first realised. This put Russell from fourth to nineteenth and he got himself back into eighth before having to retire.
This is Russell's second retirement of the season so far and a disappointing end for the driver. The team shared to social media:
"LAP 55: Gutted. George has to retire from the race with left-front brake issues."
Mercedes are now relying on seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton to get as many points as possible. Hamilton is currently in third position but is gaining on Fernando Alonso in second.
