F1 News: George Russell Surprises Marshals Involved In Zhou Silverstone Crash Last Year
Talks about the upcoming Silverstone Grand Prix bring back fresh memories of last year's horrific crash involving five different Formula 1 cars.
The incident occurred when George Russell's Mercedes accidentally clipped F1 driver Zhou Guanyu's Alfa Romeo. The immense amount of force flipped Zhou's car upside down as it hurtled toward the barrier. The impact of the crash also affected Alex Albon's Williams, Yuki Tsunoda's Alpha Tauri, and Alpine's Esteban Ocon.
Zhou was fortunate to survive the horrific crash, thanks to the Marshals for getting him out quickly from under his car. He added that the Halo device on the F1 car saved his life at the time of impact.
In a rather sweet gesture, George Russell planned a "once in a lifetime experience" surprise for the marshals who helped during Zhou's incident. The saviors were invited by George Russell and the team for a tour of the Mercedes AMG F1 Operations Centre.
At the facility, the 25-year-old British Racer suddenly appeared from behind and surprised the Marshals who were thrilled and happy to meet Russell.
Talking about the event, Marshal Joost van Gerwen said:
"Today I was a guest of the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team.
"All the marshals involved in the incident with Zhou last year in Silverstone were invited by George Russell for a tour at the Mercedes AMG F1 Operations Centre.
"It was a great and a once in a lifetime experience. At the end George joined us for a chat and some photos despite his busy schedule in between two back-to-back races.
"My thanks go to Gareth Thomas-Impey for arranging this all and off course to George Russell and the Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 Team."
What better way could there be of bringing closure to such a horrific event than by expressing gratitude to the saviours of the day?
