F1 News: Watch As George Russell's Tyre Flies Off During Canadian GP Pitstop In Close-Call Moment

Footage has been released of a heart-in-mouth moment for the Mercedes team during the Canadian Grand Prix.

Footage has been released of a close-call moment during the Canadian Grand Prix where one of George Russell's rear tyres flies off in the pit lane.

The British driver was running in fourth position when he lost control over the sausage kerb of the chicane and ended up colliding with the race wall. He suffered damage to his front wing, nose, and rear right tyre. The driver initially thought he would be out of the race at this point, however, he managed to get the car back to the pits where the team replaced the tyre and front nose as the race was under red flag conditions.

Russell rejoined the race in nineteenth position and worked his way back up the grid only to encounter a brake duct issue and be forced to retire.

Fans have now released footage of the pit stop showing Russell's rear right tyre fly off down the pit lane causing two engineers to have to jump out of the way. The tyre was quickly stopped by a Ferrari engineer to got the tyre out of the way and back to the Mercedes team.

Sharing the moment to Twitter, one fan wrote:

"The moment George's rear right tyre veered off on its own path, "narrowly missing" two Mercedes mechanics. The quick response of a Ferrari mechanic saved the day by swiftly reclaiming the runaway tyre !"

Whilst many other F1 fans were applauding the Ferrari engineer for stepping in and retrieving the tyre, some others picked up on the fact that the replacement tyres and front wing were not ready which indicates that the team had thought Russell would have to retire at this point of the race.
