Former F1 driver Timo Glock has expressed disappointment in Haas team principal Guenther Steiner's handling of Mick Schumacher's career, suggesting that better support could have significantly changed the young driver's trajectory in Formula 1. Glock's remarks come as we lead up to the tenth anniversary of Michael Schumacher's skiing incident.

Key Takeaways:

  • Timo Glock Critique: Glock believes that Guenther Steiner failed to provide the necessary support for Mick Schumacher as he transitioned into F1. He feels that this lack of support impacted Schumacher's ability to showcase his true potential.
  • Mick Schumacher's Journey: After progressing through F3 and F2, Schumacher faced immense pressure in F1, heightened by the absence of his father, Michael Schumacher. Despite this, Glock commends Mick's handling of the pressure and his performance under challenging circumstances.
  • New Beginnings at Mercedes: Schumacher's move to Mercedes as a reserve driver is seen as a fresh start. He will be backing up Lewis Hamilton and George Russell, with Toto Wolff praising his talent and work ethic.

Timo Glock, former Formula 1 driver, shared his views on Mick Schumacher's time at the American team, suggesting that team principal Guenther Steiner did not effectively support the young driver.

Glock said:

"I hope he has the chance to show his real talent, and he was not able to show that in F1 in the circumstances he had with the Haas team. Guenther Steiner, in my opinion, did not do his job in the right way to support a young driver coming through with such pressure on his shoulders."

Glock also reflected on the challenges Schumacher faced in F1, noting that he entered the sport "blind" after moving up from F3 and F2.

"This would have been the time when Michael, his father, could have been very supportive for him and would have had the right tips and been there to help in both the good and bad situations," he added.

"How Mick handled the pressure for someone so young was outstanding. The weight on his shoulder was a lot and he still managed to deliver in F1."

Guenther Steiner - Haas

In contrast, Glock believes that the situation at Haas could have been different if Steiner and the team had offered more support.

"But it would have been different if the team and Guenther Steiner had been properly behind him," he stated.

This context becomes significant considering Mick Schumacher's move to Mercedes as their reserve driver for the 2023 season and beyond. This new role follows his departure from Haas, where he was replaced by experienced driver Nico Hulkenberg. At Mercedes, Schumacher is solid backup for Lewis Hamilton and George Russell, and he is expected to play a crucial role in developing the W15, the team's car for the next season as they move away from the failing concept of the zero-pod.

Schumacher expressed excitement about his role at Mercedes on joining, saying:

"I am thrilled to be part of the Mercedes team and I am committed to give it my all to contribute to their performance in this very competitive and professional environment."

Schumacher's move to Mercedes marks a new chapter in his career, with hopes for better opportunities and development through the Brackley team. Will the Schumacher name once again return to the grid? Only time will tell, but for now, it looks like Mercedes is more than happy with their current line up of talented drivers.
