F1 News: Haas Chief Delivers Update On Kevin Magnussen And Nico Hulkenberg As Contract Expiry Looms
Haas team principal Guenther Steiner has given an update to the press ahead of the Canadian Grand Prix over the future of both their drivers, Kevin Magnussen and Nico Hulkenberg.
As we creep closer to the 2023 'silly season' all eyes are on those who have their contracts expiring at the end of the season. The American team finds itself with both drivers contracts due to end this year so Steiner has understandably been faced with questions over the future of the team.
Speaking to the press, Steiner confirmed that they are happy with the driver line-up at the moment but no contract extensions have been confirmed yet. In 2022, the team left it to the last minute to confirm that they were not offering Mick Schumacher an extension and Steiner is keen to avoid this sort of situation this year. He explained:
“As far as the driver market is concerned, we’re pretty happy with what we have at the moment.
“Of course, we want to announce our drivers as soon as possible, so we don’t have to hang around like last year.”
Hulkenberg, who came back into a full time F1 seat with Haas after a couple of years out as the Aston Martin reserve driver, is currently sitting in twelfth place in the drivers' standings with 6 points. Magnussen is in seventeenth position with 2 points, currently.
The Haas team is in seventh position in the constructors' championship but has the same amount of points as Alfa Romeo who are in eighth.
Hulkenberg and Magnussen are not the only drivers with contracts which are due to expire at the end of the season. Seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton is expected to sign an extension with Mercedes imminently, and Logan Sargeant, Zhou Guanyu, Nyck de Vries, and Yuki Tsunoda are also coming up to the end of their contracts.
