F1 News: James Vowles Reveals Performance Expectations of Austrian Upgrades
Williams Racing Team Principal James Vowles has thrown light upon the upgrade packages the cars have received for the Austrian GP. Since he took charge early this year, Vowles has been on the job to revamp the team's structure.
He reveals that both cars have received significant upgrades that have made a difference of a "couple of tenths. Performance up is the main thing and we are seeing results from it." In the world of F1, that could make a huge difference.
He also says that the qualifying session is predicted to have different weather to the race so, there is going to be a huge performance difference between qualifying and race day performance figures.
Vowles hints that it's a bit of a gamble for all teams to choose the tire setup, depending on whether it rains during FP1 or during FP2. "It would be interesting to see how we navigate that," he said.
Speaking of a change in regulations, Vowles says that teams are allowed to run with used tires in the following day's qualifying session. This change is something that Williams is welcoming because they're currently facing a tire shortage.
Speaking about the upgrades, Alex Albon says the car feels "like there's more downforce." He also says that the car is now good enough to hold a good pace to "keep the tires alive."
Adding to the advantage, Albon says that the Red Bull Ring Grand Prix Circuit in Austria "fits among the better tracks" for the team.
It seems like things have been going as per plan for the Williams Racing team. They might have a good chance to churn out some impressive numbers but that is, if the weather supports them.
