Haas driver Kevin Magnussen has put forward a new suggestion of how to reduce the number of tyres used during a race weekend in order to help Formula One with its journey to being carbon neutral by 2030.

This comes as F1 heads into the Italian Grand Prix weekend which will be hosting the new qualifying format which is being trialled. The "Alternative Tyre Allocation' system was originally tested during the Hungarian Grand Prix weekend and received a mixed response from drivers. The system means that drivers must only use hard compound tyres during Q1 of qualifying, medium tyres in Q2, and soft tyres in Q3.

Speaking about the current 'Alternative Tyre Allocation' set-up, in the Haas team race preview, Magnussen commented:

"I don't think it made a big difference in Hungary, other than a little bit less running in practice."

The Danish driver went on to put forward a different suggestion of how to reduce the number of tyres used during an F1 weekend. He explained:

"I think a good way of reducing the number of tires we use is probably to look at the qualifying format and look at doing a shoot-out, just one lap per driver, like back in the day. That would save four sets at least."

The Italian Grand Prix weekend will start tomorrow with Free Practice 1 & 2 followed by Free Practice 3 and Qualifying on Saturday. Sunday will then host the iconic Monza Grand Prix. Haas is currently running in eighth position in the constructors' standings, four points behind Williams in seventh and just two points ahead of Alfa Romeo in ninth.
