Lewis Hamilton crossed the line in second position for the second time this season during the Spanish Grand Prix today.

Mercedes brought significant upgrades to the W14 for the Monaco Grand Prix last weekend, although the true impact of these was not seen until today on the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. Fans of the Brackley-based squad will be hoping that this is not track-specific and this can continue throughout the rest of the long season.

Speaking to former teammate Nico Rosberg in his post-race interview with Sky Sports, Hamilton reflected on the fantastic result for the team, although did acknowledge that there is still a big gap to Red Bull who are completely dominating the 2023 season. He commented:

"What a result for our team. We didn't expect to have this result today. Just want to take my hat off to my team. Thank you to everyone who is pushing back at the factory.

"The Red Bull's are a bit ahead. They are a bit too quick at the moment. It would be good to get closer to them at the end of the season, but if not next year."

Going into the race today, Mercedes were just one point behind Aston Martin in the constructors' standings and have now overtaken them to be second with 152 points.

The seven-time champion is currently in fourth position in the drivers' standings with 87 points behind Fernando Alonso who has 99 points. Hamilton's teammate George Russell is behind him in fifth position with 65 points, ahead of Carlos Sainz who currently has 58 points.

The next race is set for two weeks time for the Canadian Grand Prix.
