F1 News: McLaren CEO Hints At New Recruits After Redirecting "Inefficient Spends"
McLaren CEO Zak Brown has hinted at recruiting more personnel after being able to sort "inefficient spends" amid huge developments.
McLaren's ambitious project to accelerate its performance by commissioning a state-of-the-art wind tunnel was completed earlier this year. However, the team continues to use Toyota's tunnel in Cologne until it is up and running.
In addition to the wind tunnel, McLaren has also renovated several facilities at its Technology Centre in Woking. The upgrades include advanced simulation tools and a brand-new manufacturing site. These hardware enhancements have been complemented by significant personnel investments, aimed at propelling McLaren out of the midfield. Among the new hires are Red Bull's Rob Marshall and Ferrari's David Sanchez.
During an interview with Autosport.com, McLaren CEO Zak Brown discussed the new developments for the team. He explained:
"We had some inefficiencies in our spend.
"We weren't operating our own wind tunnel, we were renting a wind tunnel, so that comes at a higher cost than if you're just paying operational expenses for your own.
"We've had to make some tough decisions, but also with some of our new technologies coming online, they're actually financially more efficient and so we're able to redirect some of that inefficient spend into additional headcount."
Despite the new hardware not being fully operational yet, the team celebrated a fantastic leap in performance at the British Grand Prix. Lando Norris crossed the line in second position followed by his rookie teammate Oscar Piastri finishing in fourth.
The fantastic result moved the Woking-based squad up in the constructors' standings to fourth, ahead of Alpine.
In an interview with Sky Sports F1, Brown praised Stella's leadership, saying:
"This guy is awesome. The way he inherited what we had at the start of the year, recognised the challenges that we had, put in a technical restructure and promoted people from within.
“Because, while we’ve made some big hires that are joining, they haven’t joined yet, so this is still the work of all the men and women under Andrea’s leadership.”
