Red Bull confirmed a contract extension for Adrian Newey after speculation of a potential team move or retirement, and it has now been revealed by F1-Insider that the aerodynamicist was approached by Mercedes before signing the new contract.

It is no surprise that the Austrian team were keen to secure Newey into another contract with his incredible mind behind the suspension of the RB19. It is not clear at this moment how long Newey's new contract is for.

According to F1-Insider, a former Red Bull worker who has since moved to Mercedes as a personal assistant to team principal and CEO Toto Wolff, called Newey to try and tempt him over to the German outfit. However, it clearly was not successful. According to the report:

"It seems that Mr Wolff does not quite have the confidence after all that his own people can deal with the problems with their car."

Mercedes recently announced a shuffle within the team bringing James Allison back into the technical director role and Mike Elliott back into the chief technical officer position.

It will take some time to see the effects of this re-organisation within the Brackley-based squad. And although they are due to bring some upgrades to the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix in a couple of weeks time, we can see from the upgrades that Ferrari brought to the Miami Grand Prix that these do not always take effect straight away.

Red Bull are continuing to dominate the 2023 season, winning all five races so far and having 1-2 finishes in four out of those five.
