F1 News: Nyck de Vries Under Threat - "He Will Be Replaced"
It hasn't been an easy ride for AlphaTauri so far this season, with the year starting with questions as to whether Red Bull will give up on the team, and it now starting to look as though there's no hope for their objective of coming fifth in the Constructor Standings this 2023 F1 season. Fortunately, Japanese driver Yuki Tsunoda is putting in race after race of reliable finishes, but his rookie teammate Nyck de Vries is coming under fire with questions of his future in the sport already being asked.
The first five races this year saw Tsunoda take a mixture of P10 and P11 finishes, and while his recent campaigns haven't been so successful, he's collected an important two points for the Italian team.
De Vries hasn't been so fortunate, with two DNFs to his name already and a handful of poor performances so far this season. And now, with pressure mounting for the team to be a success, fans of the sport have turned on the Dutch driver.
"Nyck is not doing himself any favors," a fan said on
. "I don’t think it is any longer the question if he will be replaced but when.
"He might finish this year but I cannot see him in F1 next year (if not sooner)."
Another added:
"He will be replaced, I have little doubt of that. It's going to be best for all parties involved to wait for next year.
"No one is promising enough to just pluck out of a lower series to fill a seat mid-season."
A quick swap wouldn't be a shock with Red Bull always being quick to make driver lineup alterations. And there's an obvious replacement for the AlphaTauri driver, with Red Bull's eyes already focussed on Liam Lawson who is currently doing very well in the Super Formula league. Mick Schumacher could also be up for debate after Franz Tost admitted he was his first thought when Pierre Gasly left the team for Alpine.
“Initially, it was clear to me that our driver lineup would be Pierre Gasly and Yuki Tsunoda,” Tost told

.
“Then suddenly Pierre was assigned to Alpine, and that left a spot open for us.
“Until Monza, it was completely uncertain who our driver would be. And naturally, I thought of Mick Schumacher.”
Recent rumours have connected the Mercedes reserve driver to Williams, but I'm sure he wouldn't complain about a potential comeback via the Red Bull sister team.
