F1 News: Ralf Schumacher On Lewis Hamilton's Ferrari Move - "Fred Vasseur Key Factor"
Former Formula 1 driver Ralf Schumacher is of the opinion that Lewis Hamilton made the right decision by choosing to drive for Ferrari in 2025. Schumacher thinks Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur could have been one of the major factors influencing Hamilton's decision.
Confirmation of Hamilton's move to Ferrari comes after a flurry of rumors and speculation hinting at the possibility. After all, the seven-time world champion's switch to Ferrari marks a pivotal moment not just in his own Formula 1 journey, but also in the broader landscape of Formula 1.
While the real reason for the transition isn't clear yet, it underscores his dissatisfaction with the outcomes of the 2022 and 2023 seasons- a period that saw him struggle with Mercedes's title contender.
The move comes despite having committed to a two-year contract with Mercedes, originally intended to extend until the end of the 2025 season. Ferrari's longstanding interest in Hamilton since 2019, coupled with Red Bull's recent dominance, suggests that this move has a huge potential to reshape the competitive dynamics in Formula 1.
The 2024 season, which is set to begin in a month, would mark the British driver's last year with Mercedes. The Brackley outfit supported him in winning six of his seven championship titles. Speaking to Sky Sports UK, Schumacher, who made his Formula 1 debut with the Jordan Grand Prix team in 1997, said about Hamilton's upcoming switch to Ferrari:
"I think it could be the right choice for Lewis. There are many drivers who would like to drive a Ferrari before ending their career and he is one of those".
Adding how Vasseur could have been a key factor in making the huge decision, he said:
"I think Vasseur was a key factor in his choice. He has already done an excellent job in changing the team and so he can take that work to another level."
Schumacher continues:
"I haven't spoken to Lewis, I don't think he does it because Michael [Schumacher] did it. I think it's something he wants to do, for everything that Ferrari represents in the history of Formula 1, to win another title."
