Red Bull F1 driver Sergio Perez has made a bold statement that he is "not here to finish second" whilst detailing his aims for the rest of the season.

The Mexican driver has been met with some criticism so far this season after struggling to keep up with the dominant and current championship leader Max Verstappen in the same RB19 car.

Despite countless rumours of Red Bull considering replacing Perez either for 2024 or when his current contract expires at the end of next year, team principal Christian Horner and motorsport advisor Helmut Marko have remained clear that Perez's seat is secure. They have made Perez's position in the team clear and that is to come second and on the occasions where Verstappen doesn't take the victory, win.

Speaking during a recent interview, Perez confirmed that he is still wanting to fight for first position. He explained is goals for the rest of the 2023 season, as quoted by Motorsport.Nextgen-Auto:

"Victories!

"I am not here to finish second. I'd rather be at home doing something else if that's all I was aiming for. I am here because I know I can do it — and I've done it before."

The Mexican driver went on to hit out at his critics claiming that:

"People commenting from their couches forget how much we're dealing with the small details. You've seen it with other drivers in their teams, it happened for Daniel [Ricciardo] too. He came back to us, and the team managed to give him the right tools again."

The F1 summer break will be ending with the Dutch Grand Prix which will take place on 25 - 27 August.
