F1 News: Sergio Perez Reveals Issues With RB20 Despite Bahrain GP Dominance
Sergio Perez finished the 2024 Bahrain Grand Prix in P2 in his RB20, behind race winner Max Verstappen, suggesting that this was the maximum the team could have achieved under "tricky" conditions and issues with the RB20. Joining the Red Bull drivers on the podium was Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz, who secured P3.
Key Takeaways:
- Sergio Perez secured a second-place finish in the 2024 Bahrain Grand Prix, following his Red Bull teammate Max Verstappen, indicating that the team maximized their performance under challenging conditions.
- Verstappen took an early lead and maintained a significant gap, with the final difference between the Red Bull drivers being 22.457 seconds, emphasizing their dominance in the race.
- Perez mentioned challenges related to tire management and other technical issues but expressed optimism about learning from the race to prepare for future events, particularly the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix on March 9.
Verstappen took the lead in the initial lap to create a significant gap between the pack behind. Despite driving the same car, the gap between the two Red Bull drivers at the finish line was a staggering 22.457 seconds.
However, the Mexican driver highlighted challenges pertaining to tire management, which provided many points for Red Bull to take home and prepare for the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix on 9 March.
Speaking to Sky Sports F1 after claiming P2, Perez said:
"I think it was the maximum we could have achieved.
"It was quite a tricky race with the management of the tyres, there's plenty we will learn from tonight's race which will be important for the championship.
"But overall it's a great way to start the season.
"It was really [tyre] compound to compound the amount of sliding we were having. We were having some issues with the engine braking, the driveability, which is not easy around here.
"But I'm sure we will analyse all of that tonight and make sure we learn for Jeddah.
"It's a good team momentum and we've got to keep it up for the coming weekends."
After dominating the 2023 season, Red Bull is yet to another epic start in 2024 with both drivers achieving a 1-2 finish. However, the same cannot be said for the upcoming Grands Prix, considering the way the pack has been closing in.
