It's been a difficult two years for Mercedes as they've struggled with a bad car in the shape of the W14, formerly the W13. Now, after upgrades to the car in Monaco, the Brackley squad has got back into their stride, but team chief Toto Wolff is still willing to sacrifice everything to get his drivers, Lewis Hamilton and George Russell, to the top of the grid.

As the new regulations began in 2022, the German team decided to make a calculated move to a zero-pod concept. Unfortunately for the team, this didn't pay dividends, with them struggling to understand the car. At the same time, Red Bull seemingly designed the perfect machine, with their RB18 and RB19 dominating last year and, so far, this year too.

Come Monaco, Mercedes changed the concept, adding traditional sidepods, a different front suspension setup, and new floor fencing. And now they seem to boast more performance, albeit not enough to challenge the likes of Max Verstappen. Now, pushed against the wall, team chief Toto Wolff would do anything to get back on the podium consistently.

"I would give up every profit just to win on track which for a normal business owner may sound crazy, but it’s how very are calibrated," he said.

"Now the cost cap has changed everything in our environment so we are not allowed to spend above a certain amount. But Mercedes, we have dominated for a long time, we won eight consecutive championships, and now, Red Bull is just doing a better job.

"It’s meritocracy, best engineering wins, as long as you respect the rules, the technical, the sporting and the financial rules. We just need to stretch ourselves and beat them."

With Aston Martin bringing upgrades to the upcoming Canadian Grand Prix, it will be interesting to see if they can take the fight to Red Bull. Either way, Mercedes is going to struggle to find any pace capable of victory unless they can pull something huge out the hat.
