F1 News: Williams Sporting Director Champions James Vowles To "Finish The Journey"
Sven Smeets, sporting chief of Williams Formula 1, believes that James Vowles's arrival as team boss will bring long-term stability and help the team reach its full potential. Smeets sees Vowles as the missing piece to complete the team's journey forward.
On February 20th, James Vowles will assume the role of team principal at Williams after announcing his departure from his position as motorsport strategy director at Mercedes.
Jost Capito's exit from Williams after two seasons will pave the way for Vowles to take over the team. Vowles will strive to enhance the team's performance, which had faced a difficult season and was at the bottom of the constructors' championship standings.
Dorilton Capital's acquisition of Williams in 2020 brought much-needed financial stability, but according to sporting director Sven Smeets, a long-term leader is crucial for the team to reach new heights. Vowles has been appointed to steer Williams towards success and re-establish the team as a competitive force. Smeets explained:
"It's very important for the team to have somebody that now finishes off that journey and brings Williams forward again.
"We all know that was not going to be a one-year journey. I think James is very eager to start and he will be very committed to bringing Williams forwards.
"So, for the long term, that feels very good."
Vowles's promotion to team principal at Williams represents a significant milestone in his career as he takes on a new challenge in the top echelon of Formula One.
Throughout his time at Mercedes, Vowles was a key member of their senior management and played a crucial role in the team's domination and championship wins. Dave Robson, head of vehicle performance at Williams, is confident that Vowles's background with a championship-winning squad will be a valuable asset to the team. Robson said:
"When he arrives in a couple of weeks' time, we'll find out what he's got planned.
"But I think what he does bring is obviously a wealth of experience from Mercedes and its incarnations before that. He knows what it takes to be at the top and stay at the top.
"I think, personally, he's very ambitious. He's clearly very smart. So we're really looking forward to getting him on board and letting him direct us on the next bit of the journey.
"We're ready now to go on that next stage of this redevelopment. Some sense of stability and a much longer-term plan, [that] will stand us in good stead."
