Sky Sports F1 pundit Ted Kravitz has given insight as to where Lewis Hamilton is mentally with the current position of the Mercedes team.

All eyes have been on the seven-time champion since the team's disappointing start to the 2023 season in Bahrain. Hamilton recently revealed in an interview with Simon Lazenby (Sky Sports F1) that he is going to keep going until he wins his eighth championship title. However, that is not in the picture as things stand with the Mercedes team.

The Brackley-based squad encountered many issues with the W13 cars in 2022 which quickly saw Hamilton's hopes of returning in "fight mode" after the controversial 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, shattered. The team were eager to put the issues of 2022 behind them with the W14, however, the cars lacked downforce during the Bahrain Grand Prix and both Hamilton and George Russell were unable to compete with Red Bull, Ferrari, and Aston Martin

The 38-year-old's contract with Mercedes expires at the end of this season, raising many questions over his future with the team. Hamilton has remained adamant that he will be continuing with Mercedes and is not considering moving to another team or retirement. But, with his sights set on an eighth championship, it is hard to predict what his next move will be.

Kravitz spoke about Hamilton's position saying that he doesn't think he will be "writing it off mentally now" because he is not in the position to do so. He explained:

“They are searching for a new concept that the boss is demanding. Toto is demanding a new concept from his designers and engineers. What will the response be?

“I don’t think Lewis [Hamilton] is writing it off mentally now. I don’t think he can. How could he? He is encouraging the team to get on with it.

The Saudi Arabian Grand Prix weekend starts on Friday 17th March and Mercedes team chief and CEO Toto Wolff believes the Jeddah circuit will be better suited to the W14.
