The world of F1 is never short on drama and intrigue, with news breaking that Adrian Newey, Red Bull’s chief technical officer, is reportedly approaching the end of his contract. While many are speculating on the future of the renowned engineer, Fernando Alonso has put it out there that Aston Martin could be a potential move for the incredible aerodynamicist, whilst taking another shot at his former team Alpine.

Alonso left Alpine at the end of last season to join Aston Martin after Sebastian Vettel retired from the sport. The move to Aston Martin did come as a surprise to many, as most expected the Spanish driver to sign a one-year extension with Alpine.

It's been reported that Alonso was unhappy with the contract Alpine offered him, which allegedly did not include a multi-year deal. Aston Martin had no issues offering the two-time champion a longer contract, however.

Alonso’s age has been speculated as the reason for the Enstone-based team's reluctance to offer him a longer deal, which is also what Alonso seemed to allude to whilst sending a sly jab to the team.

When asked if Alpine would be interested in Adrian Newey should he decide to leave Red Bull, Alonso responded by saying:

“I suppose Otmar [Szafnauer] wouldn’t sign Adrian Newey. He’s 64 years old.”

Before twisting the knife further by adding, "Aston were not afraid."

As the Formula 1 season continues to unfold, it will be interesting to see what the future holds for Adrian Newey and whether or not Alonso can continue his impressive start with Aston Martin. However, it would surely take a lot for Newey to look somewhere other than Red Bull.
