Red Bull Discredits Aston Martin After Successful Bahrain Grand Prix
A number of Red Bull senior figures have commented on the blatant similarities between their F1 car, the RB19 (and its previous version the RB18), and the Aston Martin AMR23. This comes after the Fernando Alonso-led team showed significant performance during the Bahrain Grand Prix, with the Spaniard collecting a podium finish.
In the world of Formula 1, rivalries are not uncommon. The latest one on the horizon is between Red Bull and Aston Martin. This rivalry has been simmering for some time, ever since Dan Fallows, the former head of aerodynamics at Red Bull, moved over to Aston Martin. With Fernando Alonso expertly manoeuvring the AMR23 to a P3 podium finish at the F1 Bahrain Grand Prix, many are wondering if this could be the start of something great.
Design Similarities Between AMR23 and RB19
One of the most striking things about the AMR23 is its clear design similarities to Red Bull's RB19. In fact, Red Bull consultant Helmut Marko even commented on this discrediting the team:
"If you compare the cars, the Aston Martin is most similar to our Red Bull. There's a reason for that. Not only did Fallows change, but also some other employees, and they obviously have a good memory."
It's not just Marko who has noticed the similarities between the two cars. Team principal Christian Horner also had something to say about the emergence of a new rival.
"I think it demonstrates to all the teams that it's possible. So, they've obviously done a good job over the winter. They say imitation is the biggest form of flattery! It's good to see the old car going so well!"
Could This Be the Start of Something Great?
With both teams making a strong showing at the Bahrain Grand Prix, many fans are wondering if this could be the start of a new rivalry in F1.
"It's nice to see three Red Bull cars on the podium," teased Sergio Perez, causing Alonso to chuckle during a post-race interview.
Despite the similarities between the two cars, Horner doesn't regret allowing Fallows to leave Red Bull:
"No, because I think we have a wonderful team and everything has to evolve, nothing stands still. And I think that it's flattering to see the resemblance of that car to ours, so it was great to see the three of them on the podium."
Only time will tell if Red Bull and Aston Martin will become the epic rivalry of F1 2023. But one thing is for sure, fans will be keeping a close eye on both teams as the season progresses.
