Sky Sports F1 pundits Karun Chandhok, Simon Lazenby, and Naomi Schiff have discussed the possibility of Lewis Hamilton looking for alternative options to secure his unprecedented eighth title as Mercedes seem to be heading towards another year of disappointment.

Since he moved to Mercedes from McLaren in 2013, Hamilton has been immensely successful, having won six of his seven titles with the Silver Arrows.

2022 marked Hamilton's first season in Formula 1 where he couldn't claim either a pole position or a victory, and it seems that 2023 might follow suit as Mercedes showed poor performance in Bahrain last weekend.

To bridge the gap with teams like Red Bull, Mercedes may require a new design philosophy, which along with his contract with the team expiring at the end of this year, is leading to speculations about Hamilton's future with the team.

One possible option that has been lightly rumoured is the prospect of Aston Martin approaching Hamilton to replace Lance Stroll. However, former F1 driver Karun Chandhok does not believe that this will happen due to Stroll's father owning the company. Chandhok argued on the Sky Sports F1 Vodcast:

“I don’t think that will happen.

“You’re going to tell Lawrence to sack his son. Good luck with that.”

Lazenby agreed that Aston Martin is likely off the cards, but brought up Ferrari as an option. He explained:

“Not to Aston, but how can you rule out a move to Ferrari if [Mercedes] stay like this?

“He’s so desperate for that eighth, that if Ferrari did manage to stay on the coattails and they were the nearest to Red Bull.

“He’s not put his pen to paper yet on his contract. He’s definitely waiting to see how this year’s car felt. I think the great relationship with the team and Toto will endure but I don’t think you can ever rule out a move to Ferrari for racing drivers because it’s their dream and he’s said it before.”

Schiff argued that she can't see the seven-time champion leaving Mercedes, but if he was, he would be more likely to go to Ferrari than any other team. She said:

“I think Lewis would be more likely to go to Ferrari but I don’t think he’s going to leave Mercedes.

“He is very much a team player. I think he’s also said he wants to leave his legacy there and be part of the team just like Niki [Lauda] was. I don’t see him leaving last minute after all these years with the team.”
