Clayton Kershaw Explains Why He Wears Skechers Cleats

Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw defended his Skechers cleats to teammate Mookie Betts.

Few players have been as dominant over the past decade as Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw. By the time the 10x MLB All-Star kicks his leg for a second time during his windup, it's already too late for the vast majority of hitters.

While it is hard not to notice Kershaw's unorthodox pitching mechanics, it is impossible to ignore his Skechers cleats. Thankfully, Dodgers infielder/outfielder Mookie Betts asked his teammate for an explanation about his footwear during a hilarious podcast interview.

Betts prefaced his question with a backhanded compliment. "Do you know the confidence you have to wear Skechers on the mound? How did that happen, bro? Skechers."

Kershaw laughed before explaining his cleats' origin story, "They have been awesome. I was Under Armour my whole career. They just stopped making my cleat. And, so, I had enough for a few years after, and I kept trying new cleats of theirs in the interim."

Kershaw continued, "I was like, 'Man, these just don't feel right.' The guy that helps me out in L.A., his name is Bill. He reached out to Skechers, and they said, 'Oh, we can make a cleat for him.' And sure enough, they did, and it felt amazing."

Betts then asked if Kershaw's decision was based on comfort. Kershaw defended his choice of footwear by saying, "Hey, I think the spikes look great. Have you seen them this year? They look great!"

Kershaw's low-key style is apparently catching on in MLB. "There have been a lot of guys out there telling me they want to try them." Kershaw pointed to Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Wade Miley as an example.

Los Angeles hosts Milwaukee tonight, and as luck would have it, Kershaw and Miley are both scheduled to start. Sneakerheads should take note of their fire player-exclusive Skechers cleats. Stay tuned to FanNation Kicks for all your footwear coverage.
