Man City Finish Job Against Bayern Munich To Set Up Champions League Semi-Final Clash With Real Madrid
Bayern Munich 1-1 Man City (1-4 on agg)
Manchester City sealed their place in the Champions League semi-finals for the fourth time in the club's history by completing a 4-1 aggregate win over six-time winners Bayern Munich on Wednesday night.
Bayern had won all eight of their Champions League games this season prior to last week's 3-0 first-leg defeat at the Etihad Stadium.
But they were unable to beat Pep Guardiola's side, who backed up their status as favorites to win the tournament with a confident performance in a 1-1 draw in Germany.
City should have gone 4-0 up on aggregate in the 38th minute but Erling Haaland blasted a penalty kick over the bar after Dayot Upamecano had been penalized for handball.
However, Haaland did get his 48th club goal of the season 12 minutes into the second half with a powerful finish following a slip by Upamecano.
That goal was set up by Kevin De Bruyne, who now has more assists this season than in any previous campaign during his City career.
Bayern avoided defeat on the night after being awarded a penalty of their own. It was conceded by Manuel Akanji for another handball offense and converted by Joshua Kimmich.
But Bayern never threatened a proper comeback.
City will meet reigning champions Real Madrid in the semi-finals.
Real have already knocked Liverpool and Chelsea out of Europe this season but City will start that clash as heavy favorites to reach the final.
City and Real have faced each other eight times in UCL history. Both sides have won three games each, while there have been two draws.
