Cole Palmer Impresses in Front of Gareth Southgate As Chelsea Beat Newcastle
Cole Palmer was the Player of the Match as Chelsea beat Newcastle United 3-2 at Stamford Bridge on Monday night.
The 21-year-old recorded a goal and an assist in front of England manager Gareth Southgate, who was joined in the crowd by Hollywood actor Adam Sandler.
Nicolas Jackson and Mykhailo Mudryk also scored for Chelsea. Alexander Isak and Jacob Murphy got the goals for Newcastle.
Chelsea took the lead in the sixth minute when Palmer shot from 20 yards and saw his effort deflected home by a cheeky flick from teammate Jackson.
Newcastle equalized just before half-time when Isak found the net from the edge of the penalty area.
Palmer then made it 2-1 with another shot from 20 yards 12 minutes into the second half. This time there was no deflection.
Mudryk beautifully nutmegged Fabian Schar en route to scoring Chelsea's third goal in the 76th minute.
Murphy's goal, which arrived in the final minute of the 90, was also aesthetically pleasing as he rocketed a shot into the top corner after spinning Marc Cucurella.
But Chelsea held on for a victory that saw them move to within one point of Newcastle in the Premier League table.
Chelsea now sit 11th with 39 points from 27 games, while Newcastle are 10th with 40 from 28.
Highlights: Chelsea 3-2 Newcastle
Palmer has only been capped twice by England at senior international level to date.
Southgate handed the former Manchester City starlet his Three Lions debut as a 61st-minute substitute in a 2-0 win over Malta in November.
Palmer then made an even shorter cameo in a 1-1 draw with North Macedonia three days later.
England are set to play two Wembley friendlies later this month - against Brazil and Belgium on March 23 and 26 respectively.
Southgate will publicly announce his squad for those games on Thursday.
