Mo Salah Penalty Helps Liverpool Beat 10-Man Everton After VAR Assist
Liverpool beat 10-man Everton 2-0 at Anfield on Saturday thanks to two second-half goals scored by Mo Salah.
The Egyptian forward slammed home from a penalty kick in the 75th minute after Michael Keane had been penalized for handball.
Salah then doubled his tally by finishing off a rapid counter-attack deep into added time.
Both goals came after Ashley Young had been sent off.
On-field referee Craig Pawson did not originally award the spot kick that resulted in Liverpool's opener.
But a VAR review resulted in Pawson changing his mind after watching a replay of Luis Diaz crossing the ball into Michael Keane's outstretched right arm.
Salah's penalty was emphatic and meant that he had now scored or assisted in 13 consecutive Premier League matches at Anfield.
Everton had been playing with just 10 men since the 35th minute when Young was sent off after being issued with two yellow cards - both for fouls on Diaz.
Liverpool were lucky not to receive a red card of their own in the 64th minute when Ibrahima Konate - who had already been booked - fouled Beto.
Konate was substituted off by Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp moments later.
Everton remained competitive despite their numerical disadvantage and were pushing hard for an equalizer when Liverpool put the game to bed in the 97th minute.
Salah's second goal of the game was assisted by the speed and vision of substitute Darwin Nunez.
Liverpool's victory saw Klopp's side temporarily rise to the top of the EPL table, while it left Everton 16th.
