LIV Golf's Jon Rahm Wins 2023 Player of Year Award From Golf Writers Association of America
Jon Rahm has been named male player of the year for 2023 by the Golf Writers Association of America after winning four times on the PGA Tour, including the Masters.
Rahm, 29, who last month joined the LIV Golf League and is thus not defending his title this week at the PGA Tour’s season-opening Sentry event, won his second major title when he finished ahead of Brooks Koepka and Phil Mickelson at Augusta National in April.
It was his fourth victory after also winning at the Sentry, the American Express Championship and the Genesis Invitational.
The GWAA also named Lilia Vu, who won two major championships, as its female player of the year. Vu, 26, won four times on the LPGA Tour. And Steve Stricker was named the GWAA’s senior player of the year, winning six times in 16 starts on the PGA Tour Champions.
All three players will be honored by the GWAA at its annual awards ceremony in Augusta, Ga., ahead of the Masters on April 10. The GWAA dates to 1946 and has been honoring players of the year since 1975.
"I am very grateful to have received this award," Rahm said in a statement. “Our writers carefully follow every event and shot throughout the year, so being chosen as the Player of the Year by them is something I’m going to cherish."
Rahm received 48.9% of the first-place votes cast by GWAA members, beating Viktor Hovland, who won the Tour Championship (33%) and Scottie Scheffler (18.1%).
The PGA Tour is set to announce its player of the year on Wednesday and has scheduled a conference call with the winner.
